Managing Student Roster Columns

Updated this week

Your Student Roster is one of the most powerful tools in August Schools. It’s where your team quickly views, filters, and takes action on student data. Customizing the columns in your roster ensures that staff see exactly what they need—whether that’s graduation year, physical status, or other key data points—without unnecessary clutter.

By tailoring your roster columns, you can:

  • Improve efficiency for nurses, administrators, and support staff

  • Highlight the most relevant student data

  • Standardize what all users see across your school or district

  • Reduce time spent exporting or searching for information

Below, we’ll walk through how to adjust your Student Roster columns and what to keep in mind.

How to Add or Remove Student Roster Columns

By default, August Schools assigns standard columns to the Student Roster. You can easily customize these from your settings.

Step 1: Open Student Roster Settings

  1. Navigate to Students > Roster.

  2. Click Settings.

  3. Select Instance Settings.

  4. Click on Optional Student Columns.

Step 2: Choose Your Columns

You’ll see a list of available optional columns.

  • Check the box to add a column.

  • Uncheck the box to remove a column.

Important Notes:

  • Most columns pull data directly from your Student Information System (SIS).

  • Some columns—such as Physical Status—are generated within August based on data entered in the platform.

  • Changes made here apply to the roster for all users.

Step 3: Save Your Changes

Once you’ve selected your desired columns:

  1. Click Save.

  2. Return to your Student Roster.

  3. Refresh your browser to ensure the updates appear.

After refreshing, your newly selected columns (for example, Graduation Year) will now be visible on the roster.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Plan before adding columns: Too many columns can make the roster harder to read. Focus on what your team regularly uses.

  • Standardize across roles: Since these changes affect all users, consider aligning with other staff before making adjustments.

  • Use columns strategically: Adding fields like Graduation Year or Physical Status can make filtering and exporting much faster.

  • Refresh if you don’t see updates: A quick browser refresh is required after saving changes.
