Overview
Dictation is now available on all long-form text fields in encounters. Instead of typing out notes, you can speak directly into August, and your words will be transcribed in real time. Whether you're a nurse charting a student visit, a counselor logging session notes, or an admin documenting an interaction, dictation is designed to save you time and keep your workflow moving.

How to use dictation
Open any encounter in August
Click the microphone icon that appears below a long-form text field
Speak your notes clearly — August will transcribe your words in real time
Review your transcription, make any edits, and save as usual
💡 Tip: Speak at a natural pace. You don't need to slow down or use any special commands — just talk as you normally would.
💡 Tip: You can edit the transcribed text at any time before saving, just like any other text field.
Important notes
Dictation is not visible in the patient/student portal. Transcribed notes are stored in August for staff use only and will not appear to students, parents, or guardians.
Troubleshooting
Dictation isn't working, or the microphone icon isn't responding
The most common cause is that your browser is not allowing access to your microphone. To fix this:
Look for a camera/microphone icon in your browser's address bar and click it
Select Allow for microphone access
Refresh the page and try again
If you're using Chrome, you can also check your microphone permissions by going to Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → Microphone and making sure August is not blocked.
💡 Tip: Make sure no other application (like Zoom or Teams) is actively using your microphone, as this can sometimes prevent dictation from activating.
