The new Plans surface brings all of your student plans — learning, behavior, and more — into one place, with a clear Draft vs. Published status for each. Once your plan templates are set up, creating a plan for a student takes just a few clicks, and everything from goals to accommodations to portal sharing lives in one view.
This article walks learning specialists through how to create a plan, fill it out, and publish and share it in August Schools.
Why use Plans?
Everything in one place — all of a student's plans, visible at a glance
Fast to create — start from a template and fill in the student-specific details
Draft vs. published control — keep a plan internal until it's ready to share
Built-in sharing — publish a PDF to the family and faculty/staff portals and request signatures
Always current — the shared PDF refreshes automatically each night
Step-by-step: Create a plan
From the Plans page, click New plan.
In the modal, select the student you're creating the plan for.
Select the plan type (these come from the templates you've configured).
Set the owner — yourself, or someone else if you're creating it on their behalf.
Click Confirm, then click into the new plan.
Fill out the plan
(Optional) Set an expiration date for the plan.
Fill out the form fields. You can use voice-to-text to move faster.
If accommodations are enabled, open the Accommodations dropdown and add the ones that apply (e.g., Extended time, Preferential seating).
If goal tracking is enabled, click Add goal to create and track goals right from the plan.
💡 Tip: Not every section appears on every plan — what shows depends on how your template is configured.
Publish and share
Toggle the plan from Draft to Published. Draft keeps it internal to you; publishing makes it eligible for portal sharing.
Turn on sharing for the Family portal and/or Faculty/staff portal to make a PDF version visible to the relevant families and teachers.
Click Request signatures, choose the recipients (e.g., parents, relevant teachers), customize the default message if you'd like, and send.
Track signature status, send reminders, and refresh requests as needed.
💡 Tip: You can still edit a plan after publishing — the shared PDF updates automatically each night. If you edit a plan that's already been signed, you'll be prompted to resend signatures so everyone stays on the same page.
Best practices & tips
Keep it in draft until it's ready. Nothing is shared externally while a plan is in Draft.
Use voice-to-text to speed up longer narrative fields.
Set an expiration date so plans don't quietly go stale.
