How to: Configure Accommodations

Customize the list of accommodations your team can choose from when building a plan.

When you add accommodations to a plan, you're selecting from a dropdown list — and now you control exactly what's on it. August ships with a pre-built, ready-to-go set of accommodations, but every school is different, so you can tailor the list to match your community's language and offerings.

Note: You must have the Manager or SysAdmin role to be able to access the Accommodations setting.

Why customize accommodations?

  • Match your school's language — rename items to the terms your school uses

  • Show only what's relevant — archive accommodations your school doesn't offer

  • Stay organized — group accommodations into folders and reorder them

  • Fill the gaps — add accommodations or categories specific to your school

Where to find it

Go to Settings → Instance settings → Accommodations. It shows the same list of folders and items that a user sees when adding an accommodation to a plan.

What you can do

Action

How

Archive an item

Remove an accommodation you don't offer (e.g., "Read aloud for test questions") so it no longer appears.

Rename an item

Click Edit, change the wording to match your school's language, and click Save changes.

Reorder items

Use the six-dot handle to drag and drop within or between folders. A blue line shows which category level you're dropping into.

Archive a folder

Remove an entire category that isn't relevant to your school.

Create a new item

Click Create item, then choose whether you're adding a new accommodation or a new category (folder).

Creating a new accommodation

  1. Click Create item.

  2. Choose accommodation (rather than category).

  3. Enter a name for the accommodation.

  4. Select the category (folder) it should live under.

  5. Save — it now appears in that folder for anyone building a plan.

Best practices & tips

  • Prune before you add. Archive what your school doesn't use so staff only see relevant options.

  • Use folders intentionally — a clean category structure makes the dropdown faster to navigate.

  • Rename for clarity — matching your school's everyday language reduces confusion.
