How to: Track Goal Progress

Create academic, behavioral, attendance, or social-emotional goals for students and log progress against them throughout the year.

The new goal tracking feature lets you set goals for a student and watch progress unfold on a trendline chart that shows whether they're on track to hit their target. Goals can be created directly from a plan or as standalone one-offs, and you can log progress in whatever moment works best — from the goals page, from a plan, or right inside an encounter.

This article walks you through how to create a goal and log progress against it in August Schools.

Why use goal tracking?

  • See the trajectory — a trendline chart shows what's needed to reach the goal by its due date

  • Flexible measurement — choose how you measure progress for each goal

  • Log in the moment — capture data points from the goals page, a plan, or an encounter

  • Automate check-ins — link a scheduled support so recurring encounters are created for you

  • Control visibility — decide who can see each goal

Create a goal

You can create a goal from within a plan or as a standalone one-off — the process is the same. To create a one-off goal:

  1. From the Goals page, click Create goal.

  2. Select the student.

  3. Choose the category: academic, behavior, attendance, or social-emotional.

  4. Enter the goal (e.g., "Improve peer collaboration") and, optionally, a description.

  5. Select the measurement type:

Simple tracking, often for younger students

  1. (Optional) Add a specific scoring mechanism.

  2. (Optional) Link an existing scheduled support for the student, or create a new one to automate recurring check-ins (see below).

  3. Set the current value (where the student is today), the target (it doesn't have to be 100), and a due date so the chart can show a trendline.

  4. Set the goal's visibility — just you, or specific roles.

  5. Click Confirm. The new goal appears with a chart you can log progress against all year.

Creating a scheduled support from a goal

  1. Click Create new.

  2. Name the schedule (e.g., "Monday meetings with Leo") and, optionally, add a description.

  3. Choose the encounter template that should be auto-created (e.g., a social-emotional visit).

  4. Set the start date, time, and days of the week (e.g., Mondays at 11am). Leave the end date blank to continue indefinitely.

  5. Click Create — matching encounters will be generated automatically so you can log progress in each one.

Log progress against a goal

You can log a data point in three ways:

From the goals page

  1. Open the goal and click Log data point.

  2. Enter the value, add an optional note, and select the date.

From a plan

  1. Open the student's plan and find the goal.

  2. Click Log data point right there — same fields as above.

From an encounter

  1. Open a new encounter for a student who has goals.

  2. You'll see a Track goal progress option (it only appears for students with goals).

  3. Hover to see the student's goals, select the one you're logging against, and enter the value and an optional note.

  4. Continue documenting the encounter as usual.

Every data point lands on the goal's chart. From a point logged through an encounter, you can click straight back into that encounter later to see the full context.

Best practices & tips

  • Set a realistic target and due date — the trendline is only as useful as the goal you set.

  • Link a scheduled support so check-ins happen on a rhythm instead of falling through the cracks.

  • Log from wherever you are — during an encounter is often the fastest moment to capture progress.
