How to: Allow Referrals for Any Student

Let faculty and staff refer any student through the portal, not just the ones assigned to them in your student information system.

By default, teachers and staff can only submit referrals for students they're scoped to in your student information system (SIS). If your team needs a broader view, you can allow a referral type to be used for any student, regardless of assignment. This is useful for incident reports and other referrals that aren't tied to a specific roster.

This article walks admins through how to enable referrals for any student on a given team.

Why enable this

  • Fewer dead ends: staff can find and refer any student, even one who isn't on their roster.

  • Better for incident reports: flag a concern about any student in the moment, not just your own.

  • Flexible by team: turn this on only for the referral types that need a wider view.

Turn on referrals for any student

  1. Go to Settings → Instance settings → Referral configuration.

  2. Select the team you want to modify (e.g., Athletic Trainer).

  3. Click Edit.

  4. Enable the option to allow faculty and staff to refer any student via the portal, not just those they are scoped to in the student information system.

What staff will see

Once enabled, faculty and staff can refer students who aren't assigned to them.

For example, before turning this on, searching for a student named Aaron returns no results. After enabling it, a staff member creating a referral for the Athletic Trainer can find Aaron and submit the referral.

This gives your teams a less restricted view, so they can refer students for incident reports or any other referral type you choose.
