Overview
Student groups in August Schools are dynamic. Instead of holding a fixed list of names, each group is built from filters (like allergies, conditions, grade, or school), and August keeps the membership up to date automatically. That means removing a student from a group works a little differently than deleting a name from a list.
This article walks anyone who can access the Student Roster and create groups through the two ways to remove students from a group, and how to choose the right one.
Why groups work this way
Always current: new students who match your filters join automatically, and students who no longer match drop off
Less manual upkeep: no need to add or remove students one by one as records change
One source of truth: group membership always reflects what's actually on the student record
💡 Tip: Because groups are driven by filters, you can't remove a single student by hand. If a student is in a group, it's because their record matches the group's filters. To take them out, change either the filters or the record.
Option 1: Edit the group's filters
Use this option when the group itself is too broad, meaning the filters are pulling in students you never meant to include.
Go to Students → Groups.
Open the group you want to update.
Adjust the filters so they only match the students you want (e.g., narrow Grade from "9–12" to "9–10").
Every student who no longer matches the updated filters is removed from the group.
💡 Tip: Groups created from an August Query or a Requirement Rule get their filters from that query or rule. To change who's included, edit the query or rule the group is based on. These groups refresh overnight, so changes show up the next day.
Best for: Groups where the filters are pulling in a whole set of students who don't belong.
Option 2: Update the student's record
Use this option when the group's filters are right, but a specific student's information has changed or was entered incorrectly.
Go to Students → Roster.
Click the student's row to open their student card.
Update the information that places them in the group (e.g., remove a resolved condition, or correct an allergy that was added by mistake).
Save your changes.
Once the record no longer matches the group's filters, August removes the student from the group automatically.
Best for: A single student whose situation changed, like an allergy that was entered in error or a condition that no longer applies.
Which option should I use?
If... | Use |
The group includes students it shouldn't because the filters are too broad | Option 1: Edit the group's filters |
One student's information is out of date or incorrect | Option 2: Update the student's record |
Only one student needs to leave, and their record is accurate | Option 1: Refine the filters (e.g., add a grade or school filter) so they no longer match |
Best practices & tips
Fix the record, not just the group. If a student ended up in a group because of incorrect data, updating the record fixes it everywhere, including in queries, exports, and other groups.
Double-check before editing shared groups. If a group is visible to other roles or to everyone, changing its filters changes what your colleagues see too.
Name groups after their filters. A clear name (e.g., "Grades 9–10 – Peanut Allergy") makes it easier to tell at a glance why a student is included.
Allow time for overnight refreshes. Query- and requirement-based groups update nightly, so a removed student may still appear until the next day.
