How to Action on an Internal Referral
Updated over 2 months ago

The August Schools Internal Referral feature provides an additional, more secure communication method between faculty portal users and platform users. Faculty portal users (e.g., teachers, nurses, coaches) can initiate an internal referral for a specific student from the August Schools portal to be received, and treated as an encounter by, a designated platform user (e.g., nurse, counselor, athletic trainer). Users with the Sysadmin role can designate which faculty portal users can send an internal referral as well as to which platform users and with which encounter templates to send the internal referral. When a platform user receives an internal referral, the platform user can either accept or reject the internal referral and take further action on the encounter generated for the internal referral. In this way, schools and districts can define which groups of faculty should be sharing potentially sensitive student information through the August Schools system for subsequent followup.

This articles walks platform users through the process of actioning on an internal referral for a student.

Step One: Locate the 'Internal Referral' widget on the Board page.

Step Two: Review the details of the referral, paying attention to the note provided by the faculty portal user.

  • Note: The record for the internal referral will also display an additional sentence below the note that informs you of the number of previous encounters this student has.

Step Three: Select whether you would like to accept or reject the internal referral.

Doing so will open a pop-up window of a generated encounter for the student with the student as the subject. The encounter is one the faculty portal user selected in the 'Reason for the referral' field on their end.

If you reject a referral, you may chose to close, lock, or archive the generated encounter based on your school's or district's policy.

Regardless, the note will be present on the History tab of the generated encounter.

You can always find the internal referrals that you or other users with your role have accepted or rejected on the current day by using the filter bubbles on the board widget:
