Overview
Tags in August Schools can end up on a student's profile in one of two ways: someone added it by hand, or it was applied automatically to everyone in a group. When a tag shows up unexpectedly, or won't go away when you try to remove it, knowing its source is the key to fixing it.
This article walks users through how to identify where a tag came from and how to remove it depending on its origin.
Why this matters
Removing the tag the right way: a bulk-assigned tag can't be cleared from the individual; you have to remove it at the group level
Keeping your data clean: knowing the source helps you audit who has which tags and why
The two ways a tag gets assigned
There are two possible sources for any tag on a person.
1. Manually assigned by a user
Someone added the tag directly to that individual. This is a one-off assignment tied only to that person.
How to remove it: Go to the person's profile and remove the tag directly from their tag list.
2. Bulk assigned via a group
The tag was applied automatically because the person belongs to a group that has that tag set in its Bulk assign field. Every member of the group carries the tag, so it can't be removed from the individual. It has to be removed from the group.
How to remove it:
Go to the group the person belongs to.
Find the Bulk assign field.
Deselect the tag from the Bulk assign field.
Once the tag is removed from the group's Bulk assign field, it will no longer be applied to the group's members.
Best practices & tips
Confirm group membership before editing. Removing a tag from the Bulk assign field affects every member of that group, not just the one person you're troubleshooting.
